BTS: The Claddagh Ring

I knew I wanted an electrified claddagh ring in my ELLE GUY collection. Traditional claddagh rings all look similar. Even those imbued with a gemstone heart don’t go far enough. I remember the playful moment when I decided - Fuck it - I’m putting the stones EVERYWHERE! The heart and the crown.

I wanted the hands to support the heart, not to squeeze it.

I wanted the ring to feel more dimensional, more like a sculpture. I envisioned the hands holding the ring and thrusting it forward.

I wanted the crown to dazzle.

I also wanted to maximize the light. I chose to set the stones with a dramatic prong setting to maximize the sparkle.

When I showed my mom the ELLE GUY Claddagh ring, she was taken aback. “That’s a lot of stones!” she exclaimed.

Had I gone too far? Is it too much?

Then I thought “Fuck it!” I decided to trust my gut.

After that initial bravado, and it was time to launch, I was nervous people wouldn’t like it.

Now that I’ve released the ring into the world, people are embracing it. Who knew?

The beautiful thing about this ring is that my Irish cousins love it! They think it’s unique.

“Nana would have loved these pieces” my Irish cousin said on Instagram. I get chocked up just thinking about her.

The truth is, seeing my extended family embrace The Claddagh, like the hands that hold the heart, has reconnected me to my family.

I never received any heirloom pieces from my own family.

With this ring, I feel reconnected to my heritage.

We create what we need.

My hope for this ring is that you not only celebrate your unique story, but that this heritage piece becomes how you pass your legacy along. So your journey becomes the lore that people still talk about in generations to come. That it morphs in purpose and meaning from family member to family member.

I would have loved to sit with my grandmother, as she showed me her jewellery. I can imagine her stories. Perhaps a friend gave her a claddagh ring because she did something that required deep courage. Or maybe it was from a secret love, or maybe even her grandmother.

My hope is that whoever receives my ELLE GUY Claddagh ring, will one day tell the story of a woman who redesigned a ring that reconnected her to her family, and ultimately allowed her to express herself. A woman who broke the rules and dared to shine.

That’s a story worth passing on.

The Claddagh: I put my ring down, flip it and reverse it!

How I wear my chaddagh ring now

Jewellery is personal. It tells our stories. Secret stories only we know.

A locket from our grandmother. An heirloom ring we will pass down to our child. A wedding ring that glitters as we remember how love feels.

I remember the day I passed my claddagh ring down to my niece. I can see my mother’s claddagh ring in my mind’s eye now, even though she lives miles away. My sister still wears hers to this day.

My claddagh ring always carried a secret message. To some, it was simply the mysterious symbol of a crowned heart held between two hands. But to those of us who knew, it could carry four meanings. Depending on which finger you wore it on, and in which direction the heart was facing, you were telling a different story. You were sending an invitation or celebrating a commitment.

TRADITIONAL IRISH CLADDAGH RING MEANINGS*

1. Single: Wear the ring on the right hand with the heart facing outward from your body

2. In a Relationship: Wear the ring on the right hand with the heart facing inwards

3. Engaged: Wear the ring on the left hand on the third finger with the heart pointing outwards

4. Married: Wear the ring on the left hand on the third finger with the heart pointing inwards

But those weren’t the most important characteristics for me. It was the individual symbols that made the claddagh ring so powerful.

Friendship (hands). Loyalty (crown). Love (heart).

All foundations for any future partnership.

And three promises I made to myself.

FLIP IT AND REVERSE IT

I chose to flip and reverse the claddagh ring in my ELLE GUY by LITZI collection because whether you are single, married, or whatever your “status” is; this ring tells a story. This ring carries secrets.

ELLE GUY by LITZI is about breaking with tradition and choosing to tell your own story, in your own way.

Whether you are gifting this ring to a friend, a partner or gifting yourself this amulet – I hope it tells a unique story. I hope it reminds you daily that you can carry secrets with you  - right out in the open  - that promise a lifetime of love, loyalty and friendship.

That you hold your heart in your own hands. Regardless of who sleeps beside you.

May this glittering glorious cocktail (or mocktail!) ring bring you joy, and whatever other meanings it carries for you.

With love,

Lynda

ELLE GUY on the Rocks!

WHAT DO RETIRED ROCKSTARS DRINK? The ELLE GUY Mocktail of course!

The goal was to have the ELLE GUY mocktail look like this!

I had a blast filming the making of the ELLE GUY mocktail! Clearly, I’m not a mixologist. LOL.

I love the look of vintage glassware and I love an old fashioned, but I can’t actually drink like I’m a rockstar on tour, so I decided to create the “retired rockstar” mocktail to celebrate the release of our new collection.

I want ELLE GUY by LITZI it to tell your stories of survival, bravery and going your own way. I hope you embrace ELLE GUY by LITZI because it symbolizes the badass that you are.

STLYING MOOD BOARD = David Bowie androgyny, silk, corduroy, denim - all in rich colours

MAKE-UP MOOD BOARD: Model’s natural beauty, freckles and jewel tone make-up colours

I cannot tell you how crazy it feels to finally share the look book. To see my vision come to life. I couldn’t have done it without the amazing models Ivy and Marylou, make-up artist Axel, my incredible photographer Rich Sibbald (who drove to Montreal from Toronto during a snowstorm to shoot it!), my niece Kiera and my husband Justin who were essential that day. Big shout out to Marconi for letting us take over the restaurant for the day!

I hope you love the look book!

The necklace that slipped through the cracks

This necklace was released quietly, but it is the necklace that I keep getting orders for.

It is the necklace that gets tagged on Instagram.
It is the necklace that we gift our friends to say “I see you. Stay brave. There is hope.”

The Faceted Heart was inspired by the Japanese art of Kintsugi. Kintsugi means “golden repair.” This means repairing broken pottery by mending the areas of breakage with lacquer and gold. It is the art of alchemizing the cracks, bruises and tremors of life into an object of beauty.

To live, is to fight in the boxing ring. To keep taking hits. There is no escaping it.
I know, I’ve tried to exit the ring.
But fuck, I just end up in a new one!
The hits just keep on coming.

Our hearts may be bruised, but they are not broken.
Our scars, our bruises, those fault lines alter our hearts.
They shape them into something more beautiful.
They splinter them into new parts creating a multi-faceted heart.

A multi-faceted heart is a heart grown into something new, revealing new sides of us. More heart. More empathy. A deeper connection to others. Somehow the shattering makes room for more of us. A stronger self. We become more interesting.

Those facets reflect the light. And those lights are blinding. The scratches, bruises and pain will fade with time, but the light remains. Glowing. Brilliant. We become a lighthouse. We become a disco ball!

A reminder of our time spent in the rings of life.
And we will keep on fighting. And life will keep on molding our hearts until all that is left, is pure light.

With love,

Lynda

I’m a Work in Progress

Finished is Better Than Perfect — Being creative is like giving birth to the unknown. It can be terrifying, and yet, a voice within tells us to let it out. Fear, doubt and more fear, can get in the way. Sometimes we can’t do it alone. We need a midwife. That midwife may be another person, a muse, or in my case, it tends to be a thought. A phrase. A quote. A few words that completely change how I’m feeling. Those words move me forward. You know the saying “We create what we need”? On the cusp of a big exciting project (coming later this year!) I found myself blocked by fear. This can happen. I don’t want to let anyone down. Sometimes that fear can cripple me, but I want to create! I’ve turned to daily meditation, specifically the CALM app, to get perspective.

One day, I was listening to a daily meditation, about a student and a teacher. The student was struggling with their meditation practise. The teacher said “This won’t last”. In their next meeting, the student said their practise was flowing easily, and the teacher said “This won’t last.” These words triggered a realization in me. I’d spent my life chasing an abstract state of permanent joy or success. I thought that if I achieved x, y or z I’d arrive somewhere else better, that I’d be someone else better. In that moment, I thought about all the artists I admire who call their on-going art, a work in progress. I realized that by chasing an imaginary state of being, that I was missing the transcendent state of releasing myself from perfectionism. There is no such thing as perfect. We are already there. In this moment.

The words “Work in Progress” or WIP trigger a deep reminder, to liberate myself from the expectations of perfectionism, and remember that any feelings of fear, joy, ecstasy, sadness or boredom will pass. Just do the thing. Make the thing. Because that’s how you get to the next thing. And the next. Something finished, is better than something perfect.

Giving birth to creativity means letting go. I hope these rings and necklaces help remind you every day, to do the thing, and let go.

With love,

Lynda

The WIP ring and necklace are available in sterling silver and gold vermeil.

Personalized: The Infinity chain

Since we founded LITZI we have believed very much in the individual stories of the people who wear our jewellery. Whether it be pieces from our collections, or custom pieces, the idea is that you make it your own and the jewellery represents something of your story. For us, the people who wear LITZI jewellery, is what makes it truly shine.

Alongside our collections we have consistently been approached to make custom or personalised jewellery as well. It is something we love to do, partly for the challenge and also because it brings us closer to our customers and the amazing stories they each have.

The symbol is a reminder that there are no limits to energy because what I put out comes back and the quality of the energy I consume is important because I want to leave this place a little better than how I found it.
