Do you have those people that make you feel like it’s all on purpose? That person who brings you a cup of tea, writes you a love note, or bakes your favourite dessert? That person who is the shelter from the storm? That person who sends you the funniest gif at the exact right moment?
We always celebrate romantic love…but what about that friend who cheerleads you to go beyond your comfort zone. Your kid who says something that makes you giggle, right when you are in the thick of it. That parent who appreciates a call. The colleague who is patient, even when you fuck up.
These moments are gold. It’s the little things, don’t you think; that make life make sense?
I hear my son chatting about Valentine’s Day cards and I think about how sweet it is that love is a concept right now. I think about how at one point it’s about candy and roses and grand gestures. Now, I see that relationships are a whole other box of chocolates. When big life decisions test the waters… love is a boat that you paddle together, until one day it changes again to a quieter togetherness. It’s forever changing, no two loves are the same.
Why do we celebrate Valentine’s Day? I always come back to the little rituals that mark our paths. Not the pressure of it, but just taking that moment to say I love you. I appreciate you. An excuse to spoil someone or offer a little kindness.
It’s a reminder to take a moment to say the thing… to do the thing. Time passes so fast. Looking back, those little things become the biggest things we remember.
