I love the tension of the push and pull between opposites. It’s a big part of the LITZI vibe. Yes, I’ve designed delicate heart necklaces, but there is always something off kilter about them. And, I’ll wear one with a FUCK ring. LITZI is a brand for everyone and every mood, because while you can find classic pieces, you can also find something that expresses your edge. LITZI has been around for 8 years and in that time, we’ve designed many collections. Every time we release a collection, I create a look-book to feature the jewellery.

For my latest look-book, I wanted to do something different. I wanted to marry all the collections and show you how they all live together. I wanted close-ups of the pieces. To show you cool rich textures. How the chains sliver, the moissanite rings dazzle and the FUCK rings stack up.

I hired my friend Rich, a sought-after fashion photographer. I gave him a detailed shot list and this vision board. 

I hired my friend Vanessa as my model because she has the raw elegance I wanted. With perfect skin and sharp facial features, her seriously sexy vibe felt like the embodiment of LITZI. 

Luckily, Vanessa has a serious love of fashion and brought the strong monotone pieces I wanted to the shoot. A neutral bando, an oversized black leather trench and a red strapless jumpsuit.

We knew what we wanted. We mixed metals, sexy textures, and the collections. Because we were prepared; magic happened on set. (AKA – my place. LOL.)

Rich zoomed in on the jewellery. While we were simultaneously watching the shots appear on the laptop, he surprised us. He switched a few colour shots to B&W, and in that moment, we all knew we were creating something seriously special. 

The duality of "Classic Scarlett Johansson meets Over-The-Top Mob Wife" aesthetic made the tension I wanted skyrocket off the screen.

Pack It Up, Pack It In, Let *Us* Begin

Hey!

How were your holidays? Were they restful? Were they a whirlwind? Are you feeling the New Year energy? Have you had a glass of water today?

At this time of year I feel we’re all going at a different pace. My first week back didn’t go as planned and that’s ok. The New Year comes with big expectations, but I’m taking it slow. I am planting mental seeds and allowing my body to rest, so my flowers can grow later. I’m packing my bikini for a quick trip to the beach! I can’t wait to feel the sun on my skin and that sense of renewal. I’ll definitely get to my goals later. Not because I’m addicted to a go-getter-to-do list (ok, I am a little), but because I want to stay purposeful and not so focused that I don’t give myself the space to improvise.

My biggest goal last year was to learn to trust and listen to my own inner voice. Now that I have strengthened that muscle, I know that I can keep my eyes on the road map, and get creative. I’m in no rush to get to the finish line, it’s all a Work In Progress, right? I want to take rests on the side of the road and be able to take detours when something shiny catches my eye. I know a map is important, but there is nothing like the possibility of the open road. Happy driving…no matter where you go or how fast you travel.

WHAT A YEAR!

In January, I sat down to write out my intentions for the year. What came to the surface for me was to use my voice and trust my gut. As an introverted creative and business owner, it can be a challenge to do everything. Design. Execute. Market. Ship. Customer Service. Social Media. I’m not complaining, I love it all!

In 2023, with these two goals as my guides, I found a mentor to help me strategize. A friend to help me set goals. A friend to help me communicate my vision to you. This year I amassed a small posse of amazing women (including my wonderful niece!) that I am happy to call friends and now - colleagues - who have helped me cultivate my business behind the scenes. Month by month I have made huge strides that you may not even be aware of. 

Outwards - I launched Elle Guy x LITZI - a dream that sat secretly sparkling in my bag for two years. I have released 8 new LITZI products (including these new Horseshoe Hoops!). I have put myself forward as the face of this company and BTS - I used my gut instinct to make a million decisions. LITZI was part of a huge Converse x Browns campaign! I redesigned the website and executed two photo shoots! I’ve initiated partnerships with some incredible business women who will help LITZI grow exponentially (fingers crossed!). I am not trying to toot my own horn. I am simply reflecting on how much you can accomplish in a year when you are very well surrounded and hold yourself accountable. When you give a fuck! A shout out to these women who have been by my side. I hope you are well surrounded too. 

I have to say thank you to all of you who supported LITZI this year, and do every year! Your messages mean so much. One of my goals for 2024 is to share them more often, like this one:

May this holiday season be a time to celebrate everything you have accomplished, all the bumps in the road you have traversed and allow for moments to toast the people who not only treasure your voice, but who help amplify it as loud as possible. POP UP

On Monday, December 4th, LITZI kicked off a new partnership with Teck Studio, a brand new Montreal hair salon opened by my friend Cassandra. Teck Studio will start carrying LITZI products in 2024. It was incredible to see friends and family come out to celebrate, party and shop! Teck Studio and L’Oréal provided hair services! Chef Stefano Faita provided the wine! It was so meaningful that people showed up - regardless of the fucking snowstorm!

Before LITZI was born, I was a teenager who dreamed of becoming a professional basketball player. Stickers were my guides. It’s true! I had a colour-coded system to remind me of the goals I had to meet. Seeing the little round red or orange stickers would keep goals at the top of my mind. They made it easier to access the motivation to go for that run or lift weights that day. Those stickers were all over my bedroom and belongings. It looked like my place had the chicken pox. Hey, it worked…

Those daily reminders brought me to courts all over Europe — a dream come true.

Now that I’m a full grown and sophisticated (*ahem*) adult, I use my jewellery to remind me of my goals, or to keep me motivated throughout the day. Could my to-do list BE any longer? Hello WIP necklace! Do you hear me?

When I’m choosing necklaces for the day, I start with a check in and ask myself what I need a reminder of that day. Is it a “WIP” day? Is it a “fuck it” day? Or, is it a “love” day? I layer my necklaces when I want to tell a story. I think it’s an art. We’ve all been frustrated by tiny thin chains that get tangled and break. So, if I want to layer two or more chains, I make sure they are different lengths and vary in weight. I’ll mix a thin chain with a heavier chain so they don’t get tangled. Mixing metals is key. Yes, we mix metals now.

Ideally - I’ll start with a longer 20” pendant, then I’ll add an 18” medium weight chain and finish with a 16” chain. It’s a whole vibe.

HOOP DREAMS

I used to be known as “the girl who wears sweatpants” in art school. This was before sweatpants were considered “cool”.

It’s crazy how the pressure to conform exists everywhere, even in a place where being an individual is the whole point.

That pressure can make us feel like we are doing something wrong, or make us doubt ourself, or even change ourselves to fit in. It can feel like a battle, or it can feel like we are living a lie if we hide ourself.

In my past life as a professional basketball player, showing up for my team was my passion and that identity will always be a part of me.

THE PHOTOSHOOT OF MY DREAMS

As I was planning the latest LITZI photo shoot, something incredible happened. I decided to be my authentic self and wear what I wanted and not what I thought I should wear. But I did it with certainty. I chose a t-shirt and my favourite sweatpants. I wanted these photos to be shot as I took a shot with my old basketball that I played with in the Bundesliga in Germany. We shot the pictures at my neighbourhood court, where my son now plays.

The shoot felt like coming home. Coming back to my self. Merging my identities into one, the athlete and the artist; my authentic self. Sometimes life comes full circle, full…hoop.

Today we are celebrating the hoop earrings worn by dancer SJ Bleau in the Converse x Browns campaign that just came out. In the campaign, aptly named HOMECOMING, she is wearing the LITZI tube hoops in 10k gold.

It is so cool to see this incredible artist wear my earrings in this huge campaign that marks an incredible moment for LITZI. Feels good to get the ball in the hoop. To score.

I’ve always regarded these hoops as LITZI’s version of the Levi’s 501s. Classic. They go with everything, and all your identities. I’m happy they are having a moment.

I love the storytelling around zodiac signs. Not because I believe you can predict someone’s personality in all totality, but because it’s an imprint. It’s the idea that at the very moment you were born, at that moment you came into the light, you became who you are. That you would be an entirely different person if you were born at another moment in time.

MAN ENOUGH PODCAST NAMES AN EPISODE AFTER WIP NECKLACE

My cheeks still hurt from smiling. I knew Liz and Monica from Synced loved the WIP necklace. I did not expect Liz to email me and say Justin Baldoni not only wants a WIP necklace, but she told him about it on the podcast, in the episode entitled – Work In Progress.

LITZI was founded 7 years ago and it’s moments like this that remind me to keep going. Thank you, Liz, for your support. I designed the WIP necklace in a moment when I needed to release the pressure I put on myself and remind myself to put one foot in front of the other every day. That I’m simply a WIP. To know that other people can find solace in my necklace is a dream come true. It makes me feel that perhaps the LITZI story was written in the stars.

BTS: The Claddagh Ring

I knew I wanted an electrified claddagh ring in my ELLE GUY collection. Traditional claddagh rings all look similar. Even those imbued with a gemstone heart don’t go far enough. I remember the playful moment when I decided - Fuck it - I’m putting the stones EVERYWHERE! The heart and the crown.

I wanted the hands to support the heart, not to squeeze it. 

I wanted the ring to feel more dimensional, more like a sculpture. I envisioned the hands holding the ring and thrusting it forward.

I wanted the crown to dazzle. 

I also wanted to maximize the light. I chose to set the stones with a dramatic prong setting to maximize the sparkle. 

When I showed my mom the ELLE GUY Claddagh ring, she was taken aback. “That’s a lot of stones!” she exclaimed.

Had I gone too far? Is it too much?

Then I thought “Fuck it!” I decided to trust my gut.

After that initial bravado, and it was time to launch, I was nervous people wouldn’t like it.

Now that I’ve released the ring into the world, people are embracing it. Who knew?

The beautiful thing about this ring is that my Irish cousins love it! They think it’s unique.

“Nana would have loved these pieces” my Irish cousin said on Instagram. I get chocked up just thinking about her.

The truth is, seeing my extended family embrace The Claddagh, like the hands that hold the heart, has reconnected me to my family.

I never received any heirloom pieces from my own family. 

With this ring, I feel reconnected to my heritage. 

We create what we need.

My hope for this ring is that you not only celebrate your unique story, but that this heritage piece becomes how you pass your legacy along. So your journey becomes the lore that people still talk about in generations to come. That it morphs in purpose and meaning from family member to family member.

I would have loved to sit with my grandmother, as she showed me her jewellery. I can imagine her stories. Perhaps a friend gave her a claddagh ring because she did something that required deep courage. Or maybe it was from a secret love, or maybe even her grandmother. 

My hope is that whoever receives my ELLE GUY Claddagh ring, will one day tell the story of a woman who redesigned a ring that reconnected her to her family, and ultimately allowed her to express herself. A woman who broke the rules and dared to shine.

That’s a story worth passing on.

The Claddagh: I put my ring down, flip it and reverse it!

How I wear my chaddagh ring now

Jewellery is personal. It tells our stories. Secret stories only we know. 

A locket from our grandmother. An heirloom ring we will pass down to our child. A wedding ring that glitters as we remember how love feels.

I remember the day I passed my claddagh ring down to my niece. I can see my mother’s claddagh ring in my mind’s eye now, even though she lives miles away. My sister still wears hers to this day.

My claddagh ring always carried a secret message. To some, it was simply the mysterious symbol of a crowned heart held between two hands. But to those of us who knew, it could carry four meanings. Depending on which finger you wore it on, and in which direction the heart was facing, you were telling a different story. You were sending an invitation or celebrating a commitment. 

TRADITIONAL IRISH CLADDAGH RING MEANINGS*

1. Single: Wear the ring on the right hand with the heart facing outward from your body

2. In a Relationship: Wear the ring on the right hand with the heart facing inwards

3. Engaged: Wear the ring on the left hand on the third finger with the heart pointing outwards

4. Married: Wear the ring on the left hand on the third finger with the heart pointing inwards

But those weren’t the most important characteristics for me. It was the individual symbols that made the claddagh ring so powerful.

Friendship (hands). Loyalty (crown). Love (heart).

All foundations for any future partnership. 

And three promises I made to myself.

WHAT DO RETIRED ROCKSTARS DRINK? The ELLE GUY Mocktail of course!

The goal was to have the ELLE GUY mocktail look like this!

I had a blast filming the making of the ELLE GUY mocktail! Clearly, I’m not a mixologist. LOL. 

I love the look of vintage glassware and I love an old fashioned, but I can’t actually drink like I’m a rockstar on tour, so I decided to create the “retired rockstar” mocktail to celebrate the release of our new collection.

The ELLE GUY

Ingredients

1.5 oz club soda

4-5 slices of muddled cucumber (some of you may even have a muddler!)

1 oz fresh lime juice

1 oz simple syrup

Instructions

Combine all ingredients and shake with ice. Serve in a rocks glass over crushed ice. Garnish with a rolled cucumber slice.

If you’re lucky, your cucumber garnish will turn out as nicely as mine did. Watch the full video to to hear what my enthusiastic friend Angelique really thinks about the drink!
